GYSD in Rochester
Teenagers from across the area spent Friday afternoon cleaning up debris. The event was part of Global Youth Service Day.
The teens who participated are from two organizations: Youth As Resources, and Youth Voice, One Vision.
They joined forces today to clean up Conkey Corner Park and the El Camino trail.
"Just keep after it, the community and everything. Make sure we're cleanin' it up, make sure we're taking care of it, so nothing gets wasted and we're not littering or anything like that," said Deodrick Barnes.
The teenagers are also cleaning up at community centers, libraries and schools throughout the county.

CIBU Students Find They Have a Home in their Heart for the Homeless
This past Sunday, a group of about 40 of our undergraduate students completed a week of planning and practice that culminated in a Flash Mob to raise awareness of the homeless issue in San Diego. The occasion for this “improvisational mobilization” was Global Youth Service Day and the location was San Diego’s second annual Servapalooza youth service celebration at Balboa Park. CIBU students designed, choreographed and performed an improvised dance in support of United Way’s Home Again Campaign which aims to create long term solutions to homelessness. The event attracted more that 2,000 volunteer youth and families. CIBU students joined fellow International students from UCSD who designed the initial concept. Our CIBU students choreographed and planned the musical and dance elements to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Soco Boys “Follow the Leader.” Combined, these students represented countries that included; Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey. They made their adopted home, San Diego, more conscious of its homeless by raising their voices, donating their time, and making some magical happen. It was a pleasure and a learning experience for me as it was for them, I am happy to have had the opportunity to work with these fine young people who achieved greatness through their passion, dedication and creative enthusiasm.

Statement by the Honourable James Moore in Canada
Recognized in over 100 countries, Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates the millions of young people who improve their communities every day of the year. Today, it is the largest service event in the world.
Our Government firmly believes that a strong attachment to Canada unites Canadians in a common purpose and enables us to succeed as individuals and as a nation. By supporting young Canadians in activities that allow them to be active citizens, together we can build a strong nation for our future. Our Government invests in youth programs that give young Canadians more opportunities to get personally involved in activities that strengthen their attachment to Canada.
We all have our part to play in supporting the leaders of tomorrow in this process. Schools and organizations provide training and technical assistance, grants, and resources. Media and policy makers promote the role of young people as assets to our communities, our country, and our world.
I know Canadians share a sense of pride in our great country. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I invite all Canadians to recognize Global Youth Service Day. Young Canadians with incredible talents, experiences, and perspectives will ensure that Canada continues to be a strong and proud country.

Jewish teens take a day to serve metro communities
Hunched over a row of newly planted beets Sunday afternoon, Adam Rubenfire didn't mind the biting cold and wind as he plucked weeds from a community garden in southwest Detroit.
"It's really amazing to see what a lot of kids can do in a few hours," said Rubenfire, 18, of West Bloomfield.

Some 500 area youths participate in Youth Service Day
Ten-year-old Morgan Oren of Janesville sat on the concrete steps in front of Janesville’s House of Mercy, nursing a tall cappuccino.
For Oren, being up at 9 a.m. on a Saturday was a chore all its own. On top of that, she and 10 of her friends from Janesville’s Girl Scout Troop 3483 were about to roll up their sleeves to scrub pots, dishes and cupboards in the kitchen at the House of Mercy, a women’s home in the city’s Fourth Ward.
“I never even got to see ‘Saved by the Bell’ on TV this morning,” Oren said, laughing. “And it’s supposed to be a new episode.”
Sacrifices, sacrifices.

National Service CEO mentions GYSD
One year ago today, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, and with it ushered in the most sweeping expansion of national service in a generation.
The legislation's remarkably swift bipartisan journey though Congress reflected a national consensus that service is a powerful response to the economic and social challenges facing America today.

The middle and high school students are participating in the 22nd Annual Global Youth Service Day on Saturday.
