SAVE THE PLANET Campaign – Local action to combat Climate Change & warming by the Children in the Urban set up in the city of Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India.

Climate change is the most important global environmental challenge facing humanity and the survival of our planet. It is already happening. The warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. The Earth's average surface temperature has risen by 0.76° C since 1850. Most of the warming that has occurred over the last 50 years is very likely to have been caused by human activities.

By the mid of this century, India could have both largest urban and rural populations of the time. This will have an important bearing on global climate vulnerability and the potential for mitigation and adaptation.

Raising mass awareness is the key to arrest climate change globally with local actions that permits its mitigation and the adaptation to its impact. The increasing urbanization in the capital city of Bhubaneswar has left only concrete jungles behind. Everywhere trees have been cut off replaced by concrete buildings and structures. This building has no scope instead to getting hot with direct sunlight during the day time, when the average temp. of the city is more that 40 degree. This on the other hand increases more and more use of Air conditioners and thus releasing Green Houses gases to the atmosphere.

The young children of ‘SAVE OUR PLANET” club has decided to start local action against ‘global warming’ through increasing plant cover in their own buildings. So that the solar heat will be absorbed at the surface and make the ground environment cool. They will purse 100 households to adopt 5 small plants each. This will be placed over their corridors, balcony or on the roof of the houses. They will prepare posters on the message to raise mass awareness against human activities causing global warming during this service learning project.

Following activities shall be carried out.
Date 23rd April :- Inauguration of the posters be the ‘Save our Planet’ President and display in the APS school. 1000 posters shall be pasted on the school wall and inside the colony. The target is to cover 2000 families.

The campaign shall be started from the school. 100 volunteers shall go to door to door with 500 plants and activities carried out in 100 target households, with corridor, balcony, back yard and roof placing of the plants.
