Skyline Parkway Clean-Up a success!
Jill Hinners, a MRC volunteer coordinator in Duluth, recently rolled up her sleeves to do some dirty work for the Skyline Parkway Clean-up. The event took place on April 23 as a part of Global Youth Service Day and she was kind enough to tell me more about it.

Youth participate in global day of service
On April 23, over 350 volunteers joined efforts in the tradition of the world's largest youth-oriented service event, Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). In 1995, SAGA began organizing Juneau's GYSD with projects from beach clean-ups, resulting in tons of collected trash, to serving Juneau's homeless and hungry.

On April 23, more than 350 volunteers joined efforts in the tradition of the world's largest youth-oriented service event.
Now celebrated in more than 100 countries, Global Youth Service Day was established in 1988 by Youth Service America to engage more young people in improving their communities, while learning about the issues that exist within them.

Global Youth Service Day 2010 Gets Strong Turnout
Family Service of Roanoke Valley (FSRV) joined over 100 organizations around the world in sponsoring Global Youth Service Day 2010. Celebrating the spirit of community and the value of our youth, FSRV mobilized over 800 young volunteers as they participated in the 22nd Annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) last Saturday.

CincyAfterSchool Students will help with beautification projects on Roberts Paideia campus. They will also help one another practice for the upcoming spelling bee.
Des Moines Youth Human and Civil Rights Commission Community Garden and Shelter Awareness Day Project
Members of the Des Moines Youth Human and Civil Rights Commission are partnering with Central Iowa Shelters & Services to purchase supplies and prepare the land for a new community garden that will be completed in conjunction with additional Shelter Awareness Day projects. The community garden will provide fresh food for the homeless people that Central Iowa Shelters and Services serves. The garden will provide nutritious food for people who wouldn’t otherwise get it and will also make the community more colorful. It is a great way to make use of our environment and make an impact on lives while saving money. Approximately 15 volunteers will be helping with this project, but more are welcome!

On Friday, April 23rd, 2010 a Proclamation and Kick-Off Ceremony is scheduled at Indiana Wesleyan University, Student Center, Marion, Indiana. In addition to the ceremony our first event the Service-Learning Showcase will introduce youth in the area who have participated in Semester of Service over the past year who will showcase their projects via poster presentations.
On Saturday, April 24th, 2010 two primary events take place which include a Service Festival from 12-2PM at Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU)and a number of Community Clean-Up Projects sponsored by IWU Student Activities Council and Main Street Marion.
Hoover High School - STARS Community Service Day
A group of 11 sophomores at Hoover High School have worked to plan 8 projects around the Des Moines area in honor of Global Youth Service Day. They have recruited around 80 of their peers to help with the projects as well. They will be working at the following sites: Animal Rescue League. Beaverdale Estates Retirement Community, Bishop Drumm Care Center, Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry, Ewing Park, Hillis Elementary School, Science Center of Iowa Preschool and Special Olympics. These students have been working in cooperation with Polk County Extension for Reach Out Iowa, a Learn & Serve America grant funded project. Des Moines is one of six communities benefitting from the Learn & Serve Grant. Please see www.iowa4hservicelearning.ning.com for more information on other projects in our other communities.

Students will assist with prairie restoration efforts.
Riverside Art Market
The Cummer Museum is looking for a few good volunteers to assist with handing out materials, promoting the museum and it's activities, and working with kids to make art during the Riverside Art Market.
Registered volunteers will need to check in at the Cummer at 10 am to pickup materials and to receive instructions for the day. Please ask for Amanda. There is plenty of parking next to and across from The Cummer.
All volunteers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
Family Field Day at the Beach!
Volunteers are needed to help assist with the activities during this project. We will be setting up family fitness activities, fun races and other activities to promote good nutrition and a healthy life style.
Volunteer slots are limited, however we need you and your family to just come and participate in the fun!! Join our races and activities and help teach your family that a healthy lifestyle is important. Games and activities will take place at the 6th Ave South Park at Jacksonville Beach.

Mobile Food Pantry
As part of Global Youth Service Day, Appropriate Placement Options, Inc. is partnering with Mooresville Christian Mission, along with community youth and adult volunteers, to provide free groceries on Saturday, April 24th at the Mooresville Christian Mission located at 266 N. Broad Street, Mooresville, NC 28117. Vouchers are available by contacting 704-664-2357 or 704-873-2177. All of our projects are being supported by our many community partners, including, but not limited to, Statesville Housing Authority, BJ's, United Way, Kohls, Iredell Statesville Schools, Christian Outreach, Boys & Girls Club of Piedmont, Powercross, Statesville Record & Landmark, Western Avenue Baptist Church, Landmark Church of God, Mi-Familia, Statesville Iredell Gang Initiative, and many more community partners.
Serve the Earth Day
The Salvation Army in Billings will host the 2010 Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) event “Serve the Earth Day” on SATURDAY APRIL 24TH from 10 am - 2pm. This event is part of an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning.
On GYSD, the largest service event in the world, children and youth address the world’s most critical issues in partnership with families, schools, community and faith-based organizations, businesses and governments. In Billings, the Salvation Army on 6th Ave. North will be the venue for youth throughout Billings to gather and learn about how to preserve their planet Earth.
During the service fair, organizations throughout Billings will gather to facilitate hands on activities surrounding the environmental goals to reduce, reuse and recycle. Projects include refurbishing food donation barrels for the Billings Food Bank, planting flowers with the Girl Scouts, planting a tree with the AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers, decorating the NEW community recycle bin sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and designed by Eagle Scout Master Mark Ball, personalizing sustainable bags with students from Rocky Mountain College and more!
These hands on activities will engage youth participation in educational earth friendly projects that will inspire a lifelong path of service and environmental consciousness. Students from all over Billings are invited and anyone is welcome to join.
LCCAP - Youth Ambassadors
Youth representatives from various school districts in Lawrence County will meet one time per week throughout the semester to help prepare for Global Youth Service Day. They will identify needs that exist in their community, help do outreach to get others involved, and they will plan and implement a project of their own. The Youth Ambassadors will be guided by LCCAP staff and Generation Mentors. These students are leaders among their peers and are exceptionally involved with improving their community.

LCCAP "So You Think You've Got Talent?" Show
"So You Think You've Got Talent?" is going to be a youth-led community talent show. The event will highlight local Lawrence County talent between the ages of 5 & 25. There will be a $1 suggested donation for admission, with procededs benefiting LCCAP youth programming. This is an opportunity for youth to provide a positive outlet for their peers.
This event will feature State Representative Chris Sainato,the New Castle Playhouse's Vaughn Hudspath, and local youth. This is also a celebratory event to highlight and recognize all of the projects going on throughout Lawrence County for Global Youth Service Day.

Dillard Academy Community Garden Workday
As a part of our on-going community garden program students, families and community members are invited to come "get dirty" in the Dillard Academy garden. We will break the land and build raised beds of produce and flowers for our K-6 population and community volunteers to tend. The harvest will be used to supply our weekly food pantry distribution, to make healthy afterschool snacks, for donation baskets for local rest homes, and to sell at the Farmer's Market (proceeds supporting the afterschool program).
Elm Street Middle School GYSD
Students at Elm Street Middle School with the help of City Year corps members will be serving for the morning at both their school as well as the surrounding community. Projects include trash clean up around campus, mulching, landscaping, and painting a bench.
Hillside Middle School GYSD
Students at Hillside Middle School with the help of City Year corps members will be serving for the morning at both their school as well as the surrounding community. Projects include trash clean up around campus, a can-food drive, creating a Hillside mural, ceiling tile murals, gym work murals, creek/path clean-up, and landscaping a butterfly garden.

Students at Seabrook Middle School with the help of City Year corps members will be serving for the morning at both their school as well as the surrounding community. Projects include landscaping Seabrook Middle School Athletic Fields, creating a Seabrook Pride Mural, trail maintenance at the Seabrook Community Center, debris clean-up at Seabrook Library, Seabrook Beach trash/debris clean-up, and landscaping and maintenance at the Seabrook Recreation Parks.
